Upto 90% of all wheelchairs sold in LMICs are one-size-fits-all. These restrict mobility, damage user health, affect activities of daily living and lower self-confidence. Very often they are quickly abandoned by the users. Very few wheelchair users can safely and independently transfer into outdoor mobility products as tricycles, modified scooters and other modes, thereby restricting them indoors. Outdoor travel is dependent and often an impossible activity.

The appropriate customized wheelchairs or outdoor mobility solutions are usually imported and expensive beyond the reach of most individual or institutional buyers. Further, they are not appropriate for the local environmental requirements such as stability and ground clearance for uneven terrain and durability. Availability of service and spare parts is also a challenge.

Lack of locally trained human resources for assessment, prescription, fitting and training further affect the right wheelchair provision.

These problems, combined, severely and negatively affect independent self-care, community participation, economic independence, self-confidence and overall quality of life of wheelchair users.
